The Process in Designing my 5CH Learning Board: Design Thinking : Ideate

Ideate

We, as designers, are ready to generate ideas during the ideate method. This stage is after we understand the users and the users’ needs in the Empathise stage and analyse observations in the Define stage to create a user-centred problem statement. After this, the SCAMPER method is used to help innovate an existing product used to teach organic chemistry. The game mentioned is a Game Board called The Ludo Game Board to study organic chemistry. It is a current product developed and tested with students to study chemistry. This game’s research helped improve the starting point for the future development of the 5CH Learning Board.

SCAMPER refers to a series of thought sparkers or provocations that help you innovate on an existing product, service or situation by looking through different lenses. There are seven provocation lenses in the SCAMPER method:

  • Substitute
  • Combine
  • Adapt
  • Modify (Also Magnify and Minify)
  • Put to another use
  • Eliminate
  • Rearrange

After this, a game board is proposed with diagrams, which could help the students. The strength of this learning board is that it is accompanied by a mobile application to help learn the carbon compounds. The drawback will be that this product’s primary focus is the five homolog group which is the scaffold for learning the carbon compound in Chemistry Form 5. This learning board will provide a basic understanding of the topic for students to understand the whole topic more deeply.
